In September 2000 during regular team testing with the United States Ski Team, something happened that changed Kris Freeman’s life forever. His blood tests came back positive with Type I diabetes. Having just been named to the US Ski Team it appeared that his dream of competing in the Olympics had been pulled out from underneath him as his doctor told him that his elite athletic career was over. Instead, Kris has fought back harder than ever to prove he can continue living the same life he had before his diagnosis. So after a crash course on what it would take, Kris trained harder, was on a strict diet, and eventually found himself competing at the 2002 Winter Games. Since then it has been a steady climb of success; as a member of the Olympic Relay Team that posted the best US Olympic result in 5th place, Kris went on to become the Under-23 World Champion, and placing 4th at the World Championships, the best American finish in 21 years. At only 22 in a sport that the World Best are much older, there is no telling what Kris can accomplish both for himself and the world of diabetes.
